Meet Tom Kan and His Passion for Typographic Design in Films

After Cannes Ad Festival, I had a chance to catch up with one of our directors based in Paris, Tom Kan. Discovered his old and new projects which always contain his unique signature with bold art direction, it was quite inspiring conversing with personnel who is full with positive attitude and passionate.

The very recognizable one is the neon green digital rain in "Matrix Reloaded" he designed.

It’s not only about typeface but also about transitions between the Matrix and the real world.

It all started with ASCII ART, computer drawing with typeface. It was his first idea like the old PC computer drawing. The director wanted to play with the famous green typeface and have some new designs options (designs, rhythms) when the Matrix is reprogramming a sequence.

Another outstanding design that was impressed by Quentin Tarantino, the renown film director (who directed "Kill Bill", "Django", "Pulp Fiction".) His exact quote was.."Hands down best credit scene of the year … Maybe best credit scene of the decade."

It was the opening titles of a film directed By Gaspar Noé, "Enter the Void" Explore more on his mind behind the idea here.

With his full potentials, he has created various projects from films, advertising, print designs, art direction for brands and I don't see he will slow down on challenging his talents any time soon.
